Introduction

The VesselAI ontology provides a generic conceptual framework for the representation of semantic information related to the trajectory, the moving object and the contextual information in the maritime domain. This document explains the notions of trajectory and moving object, as well as event and contextual information. The proposed ontology provides the terms for the representation of semantic trajectories, the description of events that can be either triggered by moving objects or that can affect moving objects, as well as a refined description of contextual data in the maritime domain. VesselAI ontology overview

The VesselAI ontology provides a generic conceptual framework for the representation of semantic information related to the trajectory, the moving object and the contextual information in the maritime domain. We justify the objectives of this ontology by concrete examples for its use. We explain the basic notions of trajectory and moving object, as well as event and contextual information. The main features of the proposed ontology is the representation of semantic trajectories, the description of events that can be either triggered by moving objects or that can affect moving objects, as well as a refined description of contextual data in the maritime domain. The following definitions are included in the current version of the VesselAI ontology:

  • Semantic trajectories which also enables the description of Routes as Intended Trajectories.
  • Vessels' characteristics.
  • Contextual information, such as ports and their features, regions of interest (e.g. fishing regions), protected areas (e.g. Natura2000), coast lines, etc, geometries of physical places (e.g. ports, protected areas, etc) as well as abstract or aggregated data (e.g. routes).
  • Weather conditions on positional data of the moving objects and events related to moving object behaviour as well as the events taking place in regions of interest.
The VesselAI ontology comprises four modules as illustrated in Figure 1.

Exemplification

One of the most simple queries that can be build using vesselAI ontology, is to retrieve the status of a vessel at a given time instant. The following example graph illustrates the triples that can be retrieved from such a query:

What is new in current version

  • Extended cargo classification, added UN classification of dangerous goods
  • Extended the definition of dangerous trajectory. A trajectory of a vessel can be considered to be dangerous for various reasons. Current version provides two subclasses of dangerous trajectories: a) those classified as dangerous because of the transferred load, b) those classified as dangerous because of the vessel's behaviour (sophisticated data analysis based on its type, speed and region of activity can support the identification of such vessels). The classes :DangerousGoodsTransport and :DangerousActivityTrajectory have been added to represent the respective sets of trajectories. The DangerousGoodsTransport class is defined as the set of (dangerous) trajectories, that have part at least one trajectory segment, that transfers some dangerous goods. This definition enables any DL reasoner to identify dangerous trajectories as soon as the associated cargo to its trajectory parts is classified.
  • A trajectory part is associated with some cargo, via the :transports relation. This approach enables the description of cases where the cargo can change during the trajectory of a vessel. For example, a fishing vessel may have no cargo at departure, it may retrieve some cargo at one or more trajectory parts and move on to its destination.
  • CO2 emission report is a subclass of dul:InformationEntity . A CO2 emission report is associated with a trajectory or a trajectory cluster, over the property :refersTo (inheritted from dul:Entity). The property dul:hasPart defines the set of elements of a trajectory cluster. Added a list of 40 properties for the description of CO2 emission reports.
  • The MooringReport is a subclass of dul:InformationEntity . A mooring report is associated with a trajectory or a trajectory cluster, over the property :refersTo (inheritted from dul:Entity).
  • Updated events module to enable the specification of a reference position (:hasReferencePosition) and time (:hasReferenceTime) for instances of :Event class. This enables the definition of events that trigger other events affecting the behaviour of vessels.
